We just got home with our 4 Goats!!! I am so excited and had to share. Pictures will follow later. We got one Saanen doe named Sage and this is her second freshening. That means this is her second time to have kids. She has excellent milking records and should provide us with a gallon and a half of milk per day at her peak. We also got a Oberhasli doe named Maddie and this is her first freshening (first time to have kids) and her two babies. The kids are both girls and only 3 days old. They're sooo cute! The kids are half Oberhasli and half Boer goats so we'll raise them until the fall for meat. It's going to be hard for me not to become attached to them.
It was quite the site getting them all home. We took the third row seat out of the Suburban and laid a tarp down in the back. Arlen sat in the back with all the goats to keep them company. Then Theya and the boys were all in the second row and I was driving. Boy, did I really feel like a Hillbilly Housewife! But we got everyone home safe and sound.
We're leaving the goats in the barn for a few days to get use to that and then letting them out in the field. We've got to spend a lot of time with them and keep them quite for a few days. There's a lot of adjustments for them and we don't want them to get too stressed so their milk supply doesn't go down.
This is so exciting for me. I believe this is the best thing we could do for our kids. I'm also super excited because I grew up with dogs, horses, rabbits, etc. but haven't had any animals since being married. I've got a big smile on my face writing this! I'm so excited for the milk and ability to make cheese, yum!
